Ideas for/what you'd like to see for RUSES
Sup guys,
As a couple of you know, but I think most don't, I'm the second year who had the idea of a society at the same time as John, but had done a bit less for it. I spoke to John and we decided to combine forces, so I thought I'd post a few ideas that we'd come up with, and open up discussion for what we'd like to see happen in the society.
First off, have a look at this page: http://oxford.geeknights.net/2012/feb-29th/ Now, to shamelessly innovate and repurpose (read steal) an idea, I'd quite like to see something like this get done, maybe once a month or something. I know that the postgrads are interested - they love it when people show some attention to their work. Lots of people, as I've found in my year, have actually done quite a bit of work as well themselves, be it work for fun or as employment that they could discuss. I went to one of these when I was working for a research lab up in Didcot and while it had the obvious geeky overtones, it's something that is genuinely fun and a bit of a laugh, something that could very easily be done at one of the Uni bars. It also lets people talk to each other about what they'd like to do, which leads me on to my second idea.
HACKSPACES (wooooooo). Have a look at: http://hackspace.org.uk and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackerspace . Hackspaces are magical environments where people get together and either work on programs or physical projects either individually or in teams, and can do absolutely anything they want. I'd like to propose a RUSES hackspace, which will host thhe occasional open night as well to encourage other people to get involved from other societies as well, allowing us to not only increase membership, but do some really cool things as well. If you want to see quite how far these hackspaces take some things they do, have a look at: http://www.lvl1.org/ where they're trying to make "the ultimate hackerspace AI", similar to what Tony Stark has in the Iron Man films.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Much love,

Re: Ideas for/what you'd like to see for RUSES
Hey Callum
You will be happy to know that we put both of these ideas in the proposal.
We spoke about Ted Talks as a way of getting people together and talking about new up and coming developments! And I’m sure if we get everyone involved will be a great aspect of the society
We also spoke about getting groups of people working together on project, such as the Microsoft and oracle competitions, Hackspaces looks like a great tool for projects and if anyone has any experience using it I would love to hear more.
